This project was displayed at the New York Transit Museum in Brooklyn, New York, in a decommissioned R-42 Subway car.
The rubbings were taken from the streets that lay directly over the path of the artist’s daily commute, from Nostrand Avenue to Hoyt Schemerhorn on the AC line.
The textures and forms of tiles, manholes, concrete, bricks and gratings captured in these drawings combine to create abstract, superimposed patterns. Like fleeting glimpses, or images half remembered, they produce a hazy impression of the landscape the subway passes under each day.
These drawings also form evidence of the artist's own act of walking back and forth in this stretch of urban space, and the discoveries elicited by this ambulatory exploration.
